Perhaps we could call them remixes. You can love the book and love the film as well, for completely different reasons. Her movies are successful our own Mark Kermode named …Kevin his best film of , but You Were Never Really Here has pulled off a first: it won best screenplay and best actor at the Cannes film festival last May, before it was even properly finished.

But the whole film had a kind of crazy punk rock energy — this was just more of the same. It got a standing ovation.

Joaquin Phoenix plays Joe, so bearded and big it took me 15 minutes to recognise him. He rarely speaks, but we are always right next to him, involved in everything.

We see the detail, the clearing up of the mess. I felt a bit stupid not recognising Phoenix, but actually he disguised himself so well that Ramsay was able to film with him on the fly in New York, capturing him taking photos for Japanese tourists, or slumping on the ground like a tramp, all without a selfie-crowd gathering.

Ramsay is nothing if not committed. Joaquin got in and I could tell it was intense. So I waded in, in my gown and sandals. He thought it was hilarious.

There is bloodshed in the film, but, thankfully, much of the carnage takes place off-camera. One pivotal sequence is shown via surveillance cameras, an eerie experience.

I wanted to approach it in a different way, to make it exciting and intense but not, you know, sexy and cool. We Need to Talk About Kevin was a success, but it had taken five years to get from script to set, and followed a time where she had been asked to write and direct the film of The Lovely Bones , only to be dropped in favour of Peter Jackson.

Anyway, after Kevin , she was sent the script of a western, Jane Got a Gun , written by year-old novice, Brian Duffield. Everything was ready.

She walked out, never to return. In April she was selected as a member of the main competition jury at the Cannes Film Festival.

In , she graduated from the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield , England , where she specialised in cinematography and direction.

Ramsay took a break between Black and White Town and We Need to Talk About Kevin , explaining she thinks the filmmaking process is different for her and other writer-directors from directors who do not write their own material.

The Harvard Film Archive welcomed Lynne Ramsay for a showcase of her films, including the three acclaimed shorts that inaugurated her career.

She experienced great frustration in her involvement with The Lovely Bones , during which personal and professional problems saw her lose the job of directing to Peter Jackson , whose version of the film received largely negative reviews.

She stated in an interview: "People started to call it 'The Lovely Money,' they were getting greedy around it. And I could feel the vibes. It became like the Holy Bible, I kept handing in drafts and I thought they were good, but it was like 'But that's not exactly like the book, the book's going to be a success.

It is a series of three vignettes of children grappling with familial realities and the repercussions of their actions. Ramsay is the writer, director and cinematographer for this film.

Ratcatcher , Ramsay's debut feature, won critical acclaim and numerous awards. It also won the C. Ramsay is credited as the writer and director.

The film is based on Alan Warner's novel of the same name, Morvern Callar. It was nominated for seven British Independent Film Awards. Ramsay was slated to direct the adaptation of Alice Sebold 's The Lovely Bones , which she had read in manuscript form prior to its publication.

She left the project in early after the novel had become a bestseller and the producers wanted a version more faithful to the original than she had been planning.

We Need to Talk About Kevin was Ramsay's next feature-length film in which she was the writer, producer and director.

The film, based on Lionel Shriver 's novel , is about a mother dealing with the aftermath of a school massacre committed by her son. Budgetary difficulties held the production up, but after several script drafts, the film, which employed a fragmented, elliptical narrative and starred Tilda Swinton as the tormented mother, premiered in to great acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival.

In , Ramsay was slated to direct Jane Got a Gun. Natalie Portman signed on to star and produce the film as the farmer wife of an outlaw husband, who, after his gang turns on him, she must defend with the help of an old lover.

In March Ramsay left the project due to creative differences with producers [9] and funders, including over the latter's demand for a happy ending.

She has stated that the film will be set in space, and deal with themes of psychology and claustrophobia , quoting "So we're creating a whole new world, and a new alien.

It's another monster movie, cos the monster's Ahab. Matt writes : The Cannes Film Festival is nearly here! It will run from May 17th through the 28th, and RogerEbert.

Susan Wloszczyna wonders if women at the helm might be just the thing to revitalize the foundering, repetitive comic-book movie genre.

Lynne Ramsay

She walked out, never to return. This caused enormous ructions. Sometimes they are removed, but to abandon a movie — all those people, all that money!

They seemed unhappy with the ending. They were asking for covering shots — meaning they had re-edits in mind.

So she left. No one had any money. She gathers herself. She was a long way away from her family, living in New Mexico where the film was going to be shot , and her marriage was also coming to an end.

So she upped and went to Santorini in Greece. She wanted a holiday; some quiet, some inexpensive beauty, some time to think. That was a massive amount of work from me, and it was heartbreaking.

But I pulled myself together. On 8 October , Ramsay was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Edinburgh for her contribution to British film.
