This took a solid 10 minutes. Even after this, the pen still intermittently skips on upstrokes and occasionally hard starts. This seems to be a common problem.
It could be a rounded nib, i. It's is quite stiff, however, and there is little to no line variation. This is a beautiful pen, otherwise.
Iconic design and the feel in hand is flawless. Weight is excellent and the resin has the perfect level of grip.
Cap can't be posted without wiggling off and this is an annoyance. The cap also requires three revolutions to remove from the pen, which limits quick writing.
In contrast the Pelikan m can be uncapped with 1. Sounds silly, but in a busy office, this kind of thing matters.
Speaking of Pelikan - the m was flawless out of the gate. It has never skipped - not even close. Simply perfect instrument. Not iconic like the Mont-blanc, but I believe it is simply better engineered and this counts for a lot in my book.
Even when working, the nib was somewhat of a nail with very little variation or feedback. This contrasts greatly with the m, which is soft, yet with tons of feedback and great variation.
Of course, that may not be your thing. Unlike some of the other reviews, I'm not bothered by the cost.
These are Veblen goods, for the most part, and logic doesn't play much a role in pricing. Overall it's shame, because I love the way the looks and feels, but I based on what I've experienced -- I don't recommend it.
So if you are even considering this pen you should have already done some research and know if this is the right one for you. This is a fantastic pen and you pay a serious premium for it, and determining its worth will be tricky based on your situation.
If you're looking for the Montblanc name and the status is brings, there are cheaper options. What I like about this particular pen is the right people will notice it, and those are the people I care about impressing.
This is a very thick pen, and I don't carry it on a daily basis, but I carry it during all our meetings and it always gains a lot of attention. If you want a montblanc as a daily driver, Id recommend a star walker.
If you want the quintessential montblanc experience, this is the one to get. If you want to give a VERY impressive gift, you can not go wrong.
This is one of the best fountain pens in the world and I have anticipated owning one for perhaps 30 years. Finally splurged when the price was about as good as it was going to get.
It's hefty - I love that in a pen. It's reliable. It's a MontBlanc! I would hope that if one was to purchase a pen like this, you would know what you were getting in to.
I see some rather sketchy feedback on this pen and cannot understand why. This pen, albeit expensive, writes wonderfully and has accolades the world round.
I love MontBlanc writing instruments. Their craftsmanship is amazing. I have large hands so I prefer a larger pen as it is more comfortable for me.
If you have small hands this pen may be an issue for you as this is the largest pen MontBlanc makes. A truly great pen!
Really need to use it regularly to appreciate it. The Mont Blanc is considered to be the flagship pen in the Mont Blanc's regular fountain pen stable.
This is their largest pen, although some limited edition pens may exceed the dimensions of the MB The pen is of a very conservative design which has been copied by many Japanese and Chinese pen manufacturers.
The pen is an icon of both in design and function. So how does this pen write? Excellent as far as I am concerned. These are not the smoothest nibs out there.
Include Caran d'Ache and S. Dupoint pen with the Carenes. That said, the MB is a very smooth writing pen indeed. But the MB provides a certain tactile feedback through the nib that I really do like and even enjoy - sometime even more than these other smoother writing pens, and at other times less so.
The MB uses the largest nib size in the Mont Blanc inventory. The large 9 size nib is a mite bit over an inch in length. It is made of 18K. The pen itself is quite wide due to the diameter of the pen which is over half an inch wide.
What the manufacturer calls precious resin is actually a cheap plastic which is Mont Blanc claims is a trade secret.
BA continues to be the subject of controversy and debate over whether the situation could have been averted, as well as accusations and conspiracy theories that the flight was used as a trojan horse to transport undercover British military and intelligence personnel into Kuwait.
Several investigations have since been conducted into the incident, leading to official denials from Margaret Thatcher , Britain's Prime Minister at the time, of any government efforts to influence British Airways' actions in regard to Flight The captain and pilot-in-command of the Heathrow-Kuwait leg was Richard Brunyate while the cabin crew were overseen by chief purser Clive Earthy.
Peter Clark had been due to take over as captain for the Kuwait-Madras leg. The flight had been delayed at Heathrow for several hours; according to the captain of the first leg of the flight, Richard Brunyate, the cause was a fault in the aircraft's auxiliary power unit ; some passengers claim to have heard crewmembers arguing if they should proceed or not.
Kuwait's larger neighbour, Iraq, had issued demands for territory to be surrendered to its control and had been staging a military buildup on the border between the two nations for weeks.
During the delay at Heathrow, the flight crew requested up to date reports on the situation in Kuwait and were told nothing untoward was happening despite news of growing tension.
Shortly after the flight departed, the crew radioed ahead for another report, speaking to both Kuwaiti air traffic control ATC and British Airways Flight , a Lockheed Tristar which had departed from Kuwait earlier.
Both claimed that the situation at Kuwait International Airport appeared normal. He also stated that he asked permission to perform an additional circuit pattern to observe the airport from above and did not notice anything suspicious.
The airport was deserted and there was little-to-no staff on the ground; at the point of its landing, all other scheduled flights by other airlines had been cancelled or diverted for several hours already at this point.
There were reports that, prior to BA 's landing, British military personnel had taken control of Kuwait Airport's control tower.
At GMT, Iraqi fighter-bombers reportedly bombed the airport's runway, preventing its use, and knocked out the airport's control tower.
The cabin crew ordered an evacuation of the aircraft and the passengers were initially moved into the terminal building.
At GMT, both the crew and passengers who had been on board Flight were escorted from the terminal by the Iraqi army and transported by bus to the airport's onsite hotel.
The empty aircraft, which had remained at Kuwait International Airport throughout the war, was destroyed on the ground by an aircraft attack during the latter stages of the conflict; the destruction may have been an intentional act of the US military to prevent its capture.
In the days that followed, British Airways expressed its outrage at Flight 's situation. BA's area manager for Kuwait and Iraq Laurie O'Toole later claimed to have contacted the British Embassy in Kuwait prior to BA 's departure to ask if it was safe to continue flights within the region and was told that a full-scale invasion of Kuwait was unlikely.
After leaving the aircraft, all the passengers and crew were captured on the ground by Iraqi forces who had overrun Kuwait City. The majority of the detained passengers were initially transferred to the airport hotel within the boundaries of the airport until the crew of BA negotiated for everyone to be moved to the Regency Hotel where British Airways crew and staff flying into Kuwait were routinely based.
The crew of BA and some of the passengers unsuccessfully tried asking the British Embassy to be evacuated from the country.
The Iraqis claimed the passengers to be "honoured guests", and were moved in the following week under armed escort by a mix of policemen and soldiers from Iraq, to locations in Kuwait and Iraq.
The British transferees were accommodated primarily on the upper floors of the Melia Mansour Hotel in Baghdad ; hostages from other nationalities were housed in different hotels.
Brunyate later explained that his father, who had worked in Iraq, had personally run afoul of Saddam Hussein and he feared reprisals if his surname was recognised by the Iraqi authorities.
According to statements made by some of the ex-hostages, multiple passengers have claimed to have witnessed various atrocities during their detention, such as attacks made upon Kuwaiti citizens by Iraqi forces; some of the hostages themselves were subjected to forms of mental and physical abuse, which included instances of mock executions or rape , and were kept in unsanitary conditions with little food.
The soldier was reportedly executed near the hostages after cabin services director Clive Earthy complained about the incident to the lead officer of the Iraqi troops detaining them.
After ten days, the detainees were dispersed to various military-industrial sites. Women and children were given the opportunity to return home in late August, whereas those who remained were used as human shields , and transferred between sites.
Sites would contain between eight and 20 detainees of mixed nationalities, typically British and American citizens, as well as French, German, Japanese and others.
Different groups of detainees were released at various stages, often dependent upon their nationality, but also including criteria such as ill health and the body of one individual who had died during captivity.
While some passengers were detained only for a few weeks, others were detained for months, often in poor conditions.
One passenger from BA , a Kuwaiti national later described in various reports as a member of the Kuwaiti Royal Family or a security director was listed as being murdered by Iraqi soldiers, although it is debated as to whether he is counted as a passenger fatality as he had already left the aircraft and finished his flight before his death.
None of the other hostages were intentionally killed by Iraqi troops. Several court actions were raised by passengers against British Airways in respect of Flight , often accusing the airline of negligence by continuing to land in Kuwait hours after the invasion, as well as for loss of property.
However, BA personnel in Kuwait were not instructed to board Flight and the inbound crew left for their hotel once the flight had landed.
A documentary, commissioned and shown by the BBC and shown elsewhere by Discovery Channel , claimed that the US and UK governments were aware almost as soon as Iraqi Armed Forces crossed the border and by Kuwaiti time were fully informed that an invasion had taken place and fighting had ensued.
This awareness would have been at least an hour before BA touched down, during which several other flights had diverted to Bahrain or other alternative destinations to avoid a potential situation.
During October , Prime Minister John Major , who had taken over from predecessor Margaret Thatcher , denied any attempt to influence British Airways in regard to the decision to operate BA ; however, this has been contradicted by sworn statements that British Airways had in fact been briefed by the British government and informed by them that it had been 'safe to fly'.
It has been alleged that the British government had allowed Flight to proceed for intelligence-gathering purposes by transporting British operatives to Kuwait.
In , British Member of Parliament Norman Baker claimed to be in possession of affidavits signed by "members of special forces," which, according to Baker, said "that they were on that plane and were put there to carry out a mission at the request of the British Government".
Some media sources commented on the fact that British Airways allegedly withdrew the computer database list containing the passenger manifest for Flight the day after the aircraft was captured; however, British Airways have maintained that this is a standard procedure in the event of an emergency in order to protect the identities of people on board and so that next of kin can be notified.
